Future employers will check your online
presence. Time to audit your internet profile, now!
- Pick a search engine
page and search for your name. (in all variances – eg. Tom/Thomas or
Tommy)
- How far down the page
do you appear?
- How many times do you
appear?
- Does your LinkedIn
page show up and show up well?
- Does your Facebook
page show up and show up well?
- Search your images:
The picture your mother loves is not necessarily the picture an employer
will love.
- Are there articles,
blogs linked to your name?
- Do you share and/or follow
the right things and the right people?
- Does your search
engine profile reflect who you are and why you are the right person for
the job?
- What your friends find
funny, a new boss may not.
Cast a critical eye over your social media profiles and check:
- What is missing and/or
needs to be changed?
- What knowledge, skills
and experiences do you want to add?
- The devil is in the
details: Check your spelling, grammar, language style, imagery and more.
- Less is more:
Maintaining your “internet” profile is hard work. Pick the best channels to build your brand, put in the time and do it well. Take time to manage your personal brand. An employer will be more likely to trust you with their brand if you are able to take the utmost care of your own.
“If there is nothing very
special about your work, no matter how hard you apply yourself, you won’t get
noticed, and that increasingly means you won’t get paid as much, either.”
